Microscope in Endodontics

Course Outline

Given the advantages of magnification and illumination, the dental microscope has become a powerful tool for dealing with a wide range of clinical scenarios. This course will cover an introduction to the development and components of the dental microscope. You will see standardized practice and advanced skills needed to handle various specific scenarios, including canal orifice identification, calcified canal location, fractured instrument removal, et.. Further, this course will highlight and discuss evidence-based dentistry regarding the microscope application in Endodontics.

 

Introduction to lecturer

Dr. Setzer is Assistant Professor of Endodontics, and Director of the Predoctoral Endodontics Program and the Endodontic Clinic. He teaches endodontic courses/seminars in both the pre- and postdoctoral programs. After earning his dental and doctoral degrees the form Friedrich-Alexan-der-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 1995 and 1998, Dr. Setzer practiced in multidisciplinary practice until 2004. In 2006, Dr. Setzer completed his endodontic postgraduate training at the Department of Endodontics at Penn Dental Medicine, where he also received his Masters in Oral Biology in 2008 and his DMD degree 2010. His research interests include clinical detection prognosis and assessment of periradicular pathology, in particular apical periodontitis, utilizing CBCT imaging and Al in Endodontics; outcome of Endodontic precedures, with a focus on endodontic surgery and endodontically treated teeth versus dental implants; and properties of endodontic instruments. Dr. Setzer is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and his lectures at national and international conferences.
